Holding your own steering wheel

Driving has been a transformative journey for me, evolving from a passenger in my father's car during childhood to becoming the captain of my own vehicle. As I reflect on these stages, I realize the profound impact that learning to drive has had on my independence, sense of security, and the freedom to explore the world around me.
In the early years, the back seat of my father's car was my designated spot. The memories of those rides are tinged with nostalgia, the hum of the engine providing a soothing background to my carefree days. However, as time marched forward, my father's schedule became increasingly demanding. The days of relying on him for rides were numbered, and a new chapter unfolded—one where I turned to my younger brother as my chauffeur.
This transition marked the beginning of my awareness of the convenience of having a personal driver. When my brother couldn't accompany me, I found myself facing various challenges, from arguing over petty issues to braving the elements on foot. It was during these moments that I pondered the idea of learning to drive myself. The notion seemed daunting initially, with thoughts of complexity and danger swirling in my mind. After all, why bother with the intricacies of driving when there were others who could take on the role of the chauffeur?
Yet, life had different plans for me, and circumstances unfolded in a way that pushed me towards the steering wheel. Marriage brought a new driver into the picture—my husband. The dynamics of the passenger seat changed, and I found myself sitting in the front, relinquishing control to him. It was during this period that my perception of driving began to shift. I started to see it not only as a means of transportation but as a source of empowerment and self-determination.
The realization that having a personal driver was not a perpetual solution struck me during instances when my husband couldn't spare the time or when disagreements arose. The inconveniences of running in the rain, enduring freezing temperatures, and attempting to flag down vehicles at busy intersections became more apparent. It was then that the idea of taking control of my transportation destiny gained prominence.
Embracing the decision to own my car became a turning point. The journey towards obtaining a driver's license was accompanied by a mix of excitement and trepidation. Learning to drive was undoubtedly challenging, and the initial moments behind the wheel were rife with fear. However, the persistence to conquer these fears prevailed, and before long, I transformed into a confident and skilled driver. I even reached a point where I could drive without holding the steering wheel, albeit in the safety of deserted roads (a practice not to be emulated).
The acquisition of driving skills brought not only a sense of accomplishment but also a newfound freedom. No longer was I dependent on others for transportation. The steering wheel became a symbol of autonomy, allowing me to dictate the direction of my journeys. The ability to control my movements, decide when and where to go, and take spontaneous detours brought a level of liberation that I had not experienced before.
Driving became more than just a practical skill; it became a therapeutic outlet. When life became overwhelming, a drive became a refuge. The hum of the engine, the open road, and the changing landscapes served as a remedy for stress and anxiety. On days when frustration mounted, I would keep driving, heading towards the serenity of the seaside. There, watching sailboats and observing the ebb and flow of the waves brought a sense of calm and rejuvenation to my inner self.
The steering wheel became a conduit for self-reflection and introspection. In the confined space of the car, I found solace. On days when words failed me and I sought silence, I would retreat into the vehicle, drowning out the world with music turned up to its maximum volume. The car, in those moments, became a cocoon of emotional sanctuary, a safe space where I could process my thoughts without external interference.
As my connection with driving deepened, so did my understanding of the responsibilities that came with it. Safety emerged as a paramount concern. Regardless of the destination—whether it was a short trip to the grocery store or a long journey to an unknown town—ensuring the safety of myself and those on the road became a top priority.
Home, no matter how far away, beckoned as the ultimate destination. The idea that I could always return home, that familiar haven, became a grounding force. To safeguard this sense of security, I took measures such as purchasing insurance for my car, subjecting it to annual comprehensive check-ups, and equipping it with essentials like a triangular stand.
Yet, safety extended beyond the mechanical well-being of the car. It encompassed preparedness for unforeseen circumstances. An air pump, a flashlight, a power bank—all became integral components of my journey. The unpredictability of life on the road demanded foresight and readiness. Flat tires, dead batteries, or unexpected breakdowns were challenges to be met with resilience and resourcefulness.
In the quest for the best tools for such eventualities, I delved into research on renowned brands like Noco, Gooloo, Standley, and ultimately chose the JFEGWO Jump Starter 6000Amp. This choice was informed by the numerous recommendations from influencers and, after nearly a year of use, I can confidently assert its reliability. The jump starter, with its multifunctionality, has proven to be an indispensable companion, ensuring that my journeys remain uninterrupted.

The sense of security extended beyond the physical aspects of driving. It embraced the emotional and psychological well-being that came from knowing that I had the power to chart my course. The steering wheel, once a symbol of control, became a metaphor for life's journey. It signified the ability to navigate through challenges, make decisions, and determine one's direction.
Driving, for me, is not just a mode of transportation; it is a metaphor for life's journey. It is a reminder that, no matter how turbulent the road may be, I have the power to steer through it. It is an embodiment of autonomy, resilience, and the freedom to explore the vast landscapes of both the external world and the internal self. The steering wheel, once a simple apparatus for changing direction, has become a powerful symbol of empowerment, freedom, and the ability to shape my destiny on the open road of life.Â
