Before we bid adieu to 2023, it's a fitting moment to pause, reflect, and conduct our individual year-end reviews. Have you taken that introspective journey yet? In the grand tapestry of this historic year, we've been witnesses to a plethora of global events – the Russia-Ukraine conflict intensifying, the emergence of ChatGPT, debates about nuclear wastewater disposal, the seismic tremors in Turkey, and the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. These events, each with its unique resonance, beckon us to ponder the trajectory of our world and whether it's steering towards a brighter future.
Amidst these global narratives, personal stories unfold quietly, much like the subtle threads weaving through the fabric of our everyday lives.
Contemplating the Meaning of Life
When I was still a student, I consistently pondered a question: What is the meaning of life? I have read some books on this subject and delved into the thoughts of philosophers who have contemplated this question. I attempted to find some answers. Throughout many phases of my life, the so-called "answers" to this question have been ever-changing, but what remains constant is my continuous contemplation of this matter.
Aristotle believed life's purpose is to flourish through virtuous living and self-improvement. Kierkegaard said life finds meaning in a "leap of faith" to something greater, embracing authenticity. Camus argued life's meaning comes from living passionately despite the universe's inherent absurdity.
Amid the chaos of World War II, Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor and psychiatrist, found himself in the crucible of suffering. Frankl's experiences in concentration camps, where he endured unimaginable horrors, became the foundation for his seminal work, "Man's Search for Meaning." Frankl proposed that even in the most dire circumstances, individuals could find purpose by embracing a higher meaning. He observed that those who maintained a sense of meaning and connection to a purpose beyond their immediate suffering were more resilient in the face of adversity. This revelation underscored the profound human capacity to seek meaning, even in the darkest corners of existence.
Among all the works of the great minds, one article that profoundly influenced me in exploring the meaning of life is Bertrand Russell's "What I Have Lived For," and there is a particular sentence from it that remains vivid in my memory to this day. “Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.”
Returning to the beginning of the article, the era we are currently experiencing may be chaotic, perhaps not ideal, but certainly not the worst, especially compared to Viktor Frankl. The "unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind," has made me reflect and led to what comes of this article.
Entrepreneurial Journey
I didn't always aspire to be an entrepreneur. However, one evening 18 years ago, as I found myself stranded due to a car breakdown while driving, I felt a profound sense of helplessness.
